CIRS & Acquired Environmental Illness Remediation

Low-toxicity, whole-building remediation for CIRS and acquired environmental illness

Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (CIRS) is a condition some physicians and CIRS specialists associate with exposure to biotoxins in water-damaged buildings, and acquired environmental illness (AEI) is the broader term some clinicians use for reactions to mold, pesticides, and other environmental exposures. We're a Pittsburgh-area general contractor offering low-toxicity, non-invasive remediation that goes beyond surface-level cleaning to the property's root sources, alongside your physician, not in place of one. We are not a medical provider and don't diagnose or treat CIRS, AEI, or any illness.

  • Free on-site consultation
  • Low-toxicity, fragrance-free methods
  • ERMI & HERTSMI-2 accommodation
  • 100% in-house crew

Documentation your physician can actually use

Samples we collect during inspection go to ProLab, an independent environmental testing lab, for analysis, and we compile the results in a form you can bring to your physician or CIRS specialist.

A Property-Side Partner for a Sensitive Process

We handle the building. Your physician handles you.

Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome, or CIRS, is a condition some physicians and CIRS-literate specialists associate with exposure to biotoxins in water-damaged buildings, with symptoms they may link to brain fog, fatigue, chronic inflammation, sinus and respiratory issues, joint pain, and neurological difficulty. Acquired environmental illness, or AEI, is the broader term some clinicians use for a wider range of reactions, including chemical sensitivity, respiratory distress, allergic response, and cognitive difficulty, that they associate with mold, pesticides, or other airborne exposures. Both are genuinely contested and evolving areas of medicine, and we want to be direct about our place in them: we are a property remediation contractor, not a medical provider. We don't diagnose CIRS or AEI, we don't treat either one, and we would never claim that any remediation job can guarantee a change in how you feel. What we can do is take the building itself seriously enough that it stops being a variable your doctor has to guess about.

Our approach on this service is specialized around that goal: low-toxicity, non-invasive methods that go beyond surface-level cleaning to the property's actual root causes. That means whole-building inspection rather than a spot check, non-toxic antimicrobial agents and fragrance-free, low-VOC products for clients who react to strong odors or standard chemicals, and containment with negative air pressure so the rest of the property, and the people in it, aren't exposed to what we're removing.

Clients usually find us one of two ways: a physician or CIRS specialist has asked them to have their home professionally assessed and remediated before treatment can meaningfully proceed, or they've already been through a standard mold job elsewhere and are still reacting to the space. Either way, the request is the same. They need an inspection more exhaustive than a typical mold call, testing that's independently documented rather than taken on faith, and a remediation plan that goes after every source it can find instead of stopping at the first one. Because we're also a full in-house general contractor, the same crew that removes the sources can rebuild whatever needs to come apart to get to them, without adding another company and another set of hands to a process that's already asking a lot of you.

Every consultation is free and starts with a conversation about your property and your goals for it, not a medical intake. If your physician has given you a specific testing protocol, such as ERMI or HERTSMI-2, or a list of concerns, bring it. We're happy to work from it, and we're happy to explain, plainly, what we can and can't promise before you decide anything.

How It Works

Our 5-step CIRS & AEI remediation process

A low-toxicity, documented process built for clients who need the property side of a mold-related health concern handled thoroughly, and in step with their physician.

  1. 1

    Initial Consultation & Scheduling

We start with a conversation about why you're seeking this service and what the property has already been through. If you're working with a physician or CIRS specialist, we're glad to hear what they've asked for, but this conversation is about your property, not a medical intake.

  2. 2

    Testing & Inspection

A whole-building inspection covering every room, the HVAC system, and hidden spaces, with samples sent to ProLab for independent lab analysis. We can accommodate testing protocols like ERMI or HERTSMI-2 that your physician or CIRS specialist may request.

  3. 3

    Customized Remediation Plan

Once lab results are in, we build a plan around what was actually found, addressing every identified source rather than just the most visible one.

  4. 4

    Containment & Safety Measures

Affected areas are sealed and held under negative air pressure during the work, using non-toxic antimicrobial agents and fragrance-free, low-VOC products for clients who are chemically sensitive.

  5. 5

    Post-Remediation Verification

Retesting confirms the work is complete, and we compile lab-confirmed clearance documentation for your physician, plus recommendations for maintaining indoor air quality long-term.

What This Covers

Low-toxicity remediation, room by room and system by system

A standard mold job stops once the visible problem is gone. Here's what we cover beyond that when a physician's request calls for it.

Whole-Building Environmental Assessment

Every room, not just the ones with visible staining or a musty smell, inspected against the same standard we'd want for our own family.

Low-Toxicity, Fragrance-Free Remediation Methods

Non-toxic antimicrobial agents and fragrance-free, low-VOC products throughout, for clients who are chemically sensitive or react to standard cleaning products.

Containment & Negative Air Pressure Protocols

Work areas are sealed and held under negative air pressure so the rest of the property, and the people in it, aren't exposed to what we're removing.

ERMI & HERTSMI-2 Testing Coordination

We can accommodate the testing protocol your physician or CIRS specialist requests and build the sampling plan around it.

Post-Remediation Clearance Documentation

Lab-confirmed results compiled clearly enough that your physician can actually use them, plus recommendations for maintaining indoor air quality long-term.

FAQ

CIRS & AEI remediation questions, answered

Common questions clients ask before booking a consultation with us. We're not a medical provider, these answers are about the property side only.

Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome is a condition some physicians and CIRS specialists associate with exposure to biotoxins in water-damaged buildings. We are not a medical provider and don't diagnose or treat CIRS or any illness. We handle the property side: inspection, testing, and low-toxicity remediation.

Acquired environmental illness is a broader term some clinicians use for reactions, such as chemical sensitivity, respiratory irritation, or cognitive difficulty, that they associate with mold, pesticides, or other environmental exposures. As with CIRS, we don't diagnose or treat AEI. We remediate the property conditions a physician has flagged as a concern.

We can accommodate testing protocols like ERMI or HERTSMI-2 that your physician or CIRS specialist may request. We don't select or interpret a testing protocol on our own; we work from what your care team has asked for.

Many clients requesting this service are chemically sensitive or react to strong odors and standard cleaning products. We use non-toxic antimicrobial agents and fragrance-free, low-VOC materials wherever possible, and hold work areas under containment with negative air pressure during the job.

No, we can't make any medical claim about symptoms, and we'd caution against any contractor who does. Our role is documented, thorough removal of mold and moisture sources from your property using low-toxicity methods. Questions about your symptoms and health belong with your physician.

It depends on your policy. Many homeowners policies limit or exclude mold coverage, and coverage often turns on what caused the underlying moisture, such as a sudden pipe burst versus a long-term leak. Check with your insurer, and we can help document the property side for a claim.
